Standby and backup generators provide reliable power in emergency situations which is essential due to Newfoundland's unpredictable weather periodically causing power outages.
Severe weather conditions, overloaded electrical grids and routine electrical distribution maintenance can all cause power outages. With more appliances and everyday living being dependent on electricity. Especially households and businesses utilizing electrical heating systems. Not having reliable electricity is a major concern.

Essential electrical systems such as sump-pumps, communication and heating systems can lead to unsafe situations and damage to properties during a power outage. Standby and backup generators keep people and property safe, protected, warm and connected.

How does standby and backup generators work?

When a standby and backup generator is properly installed. The system will transfer the power source from the main electricity distribution grid and the standby or backup generator. With a standby generator, this is done automatically. Whereas, with a backup generator (often a portable generator) this sometimes will be done manually using a manual transfer switch.

There are two main components within a standby and backup generator system – the generator and the ATS (automatic transfer switch). The generator supplies power to your home. While the ATS switches the power supply between the distribution grid and the generator system.

The ATS will also prevent the two power sources from operating together in parallel preventing electricity to flow back into the distribution grid which is a serious electrocution hazard for powerline crews and also protecting the generator from the distribution grid which could cause serious damage.

Installing a generator is a complex process and should only be carried out by experienced electricians. However, there are many things to consider when installing a generator.

The generator must be sized appropriately for your application and will typically require an exhaust system designed to safely direct the exhaust away from occupied areas and windows.

Flashproof Electricians Inc. will do an assessment giving the property owner the opportunity to install the minimum standby or backup generator system that is necessary.

Transfer Switch Installation

One of the most important accessories for a generator is a transfer switch. This electrical switching equipment makes the backup power process seamless and helps ensure overall safety. A transfer switch is a permanent switch that connects to both your utility and backup power that switches the power load between the two sources.

There are many risks of not using a transfer switch. A transfer switch is necessary to protect the safety of occupants, property and utility workers.

Property owners need a transfer switch for safety reasons and ease of use. This is important to remember, as the level of power being produced requires the use of a regulator to prevent surges, back feeding and the damage of household equipment.
